The Aspect Ratio

public - created 05/02/05
A photography and cinematography tribe for both film and digital camera users.

Why does your DVD put black letterboxes on your TV even when you have an HDTV?

Why do the images you get back from Ofoto get cropped when they print them?

It all has to do with Aspect Ratios. Different standards on how tall and how wide the images we see and create are going to be. 2.35:1 Panoramic; 16:9 HDTV; 4:3 NTSC: all these terms effect the cameras you buy and the movies you watch.

If you're a photographer or a film maker, this is the tribe for you. If you're techno geek or an artist this is the tribe for you. If you want to know how the world is being shown to you or how to take control of how you show your images to the world, this is the tribe for you.
